West Beechboro PS: Junkadelic and the Wanjoo Djert Project
West Beechboro Primary School’s focus on Community Connection and student wellbeing came to life through the Junkadelic Project, a creative collaboration celebrating sustainability, culture and the arts.
With support from a $20,000 grant from the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport, the school partnered with Perth-based arts collective Junkadelic and a Noongar Elder to explore environmental conservation and the cultural significance of local birdlife. Students from Kindy to Year 6 researched native birds, voted on four species to represent their community and worked with artists to design and build large bird sculptures using recycled materials.
The project culminated in the creation of Wanjoo Djert (“Welcome Birds”), a vibrant school song written and performed by students to celebrate their learning. Visual Arts and inquiry lessons throughout the term embedded critical and creative thinking, intercultural understanding and sustainability into every stage of the process.
Through Wanjoo Djert, West Beechboro PS has built stronger connections between culture, creativity and community, showing how art can inspire both learning and belonging.
