MEMBERSHIP – A YEAR IN REVIEW

We are thrilled to report strong membership retention alongside a 3% growth, with 116 new members joining us in the 2023/24 financial year. While we had 81 resignations, it's important to note that the majority of these were due to retirement, illness, or transitions out of the Department.

GESB CHANGES

There are some legislative changes coming in to play with respect to GESB, under the State Superannuation Amendment Bill 2023 that was passed this week.
Under the new legislation (when it comes into effect)

  • GESB Super will be able to accept non-government employer contributions from existing members
  • Existing GESB members will be able to keep all their superannuation with GESB if they leave the WA public sector or start a second job with a non-government employer
  • Changes will make it easier for GESB members to manage their super, reducing the need to have accounts with multiple super funds and helping to minimise the fees they pay

POST-CRISIS RESPONSES AND TEACHER BURNOUT

WAPPA is pleased to share a research opportunity led by Stella Rodgers, who has previously collaborated with Coosje Griffiths to support WA Primary Principal network sessions.

Stella has recently received ethics approval from the Department of Education and UWA to conduct a study exploring post-crisis responses in schools experiencing challenging student behaviours and their impact on teacher burnout.

All school staff are invited to participate in this voluntary and confidential study, which involves a short 15-20 minute survey. The research aims to develop a burnout screening tool that will be made freely available to all WA schools.

For more details, please refer to the Principal Information Letter.

Added Incentive: Participants who email Stella directly after completing the survey will receive a T2 voucher as a token of appreciation.

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY CONSULTATION

The Department is currently undertaking the first consultation phase of the review of the School Improvement and Accountability in Public Schools Policy, Procedures and Framework and is seeking input from a small number of WAPPA Members.

The input of stakeholders in this consultation is an important element of ensuring the updates are impactful and relevant. The intent is not to change fundamental evidence-based elements related to school self-assessment, school planning, school reporting and school review, but to provide updates to align with current Department strategy and school practice and, where possible, protect the policy, procedures and framework from becoming outdated through the use of contemporary language.

If you are interested in joining a small number of WAPPA Board members to create a small primary representative group, please email us at your earliest convenience.

The Business Centre will be closed for the holiday period from 13th of December to 5th of January. The office will open on the 6th of January.

If you are in need of support during the holiday period, please reach out. We will be monitoring the support lines and will respond to you as soon as we're able.

Wishing you a tidy last week!

From the Field πŸ•

In a heartwarming initiative that exemplifies the innovative leadership found within WAPPA member schools, Walliston Primary School has launched an extraordinary intergenerational learning program that's bridging the generation gap and enriching young minds.

Early childhood teacher Katie Atterton, supported by her school's leadership team, has successfully implemented an intergenerational playgroup that brings aged-care residents into her kindergarten classroom of 24 students. The program, inspired by the television series 'Old People's Home for 4 Year Olds,' demonstrates the kind of creative, community-focused thinking that WAPPA member schools are known for.
