AITSL WORKFORCE DATA REPORT - ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER TEACHERS

AITSL has recently released a Workforce Report, following a lengthy period of data collection and research. Titled, In Focus: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Teachers, this publication provides an evidence base for understanding the ‘career lifecycle’ of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers, from the beginning of their teaching journey through initial teacher education (ITE), to their experiences in the teacher workforce and their future career intentions. This is the first time that such comprehensive data has been available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers.

Advocacy & Support

INDUSTRIAL ACTION

We would like to acknowledge the work of all WAPPA members who managed complex situations with their school communities and school staff, both in the lead up to yesterday’s industrial action and on the day itself. The WAPPA support lines ‘ran hot’ in the lead up and particularly after communications were being sent to schools. The majority of support calls revolved around:

  • Not all principals being able to access the Webex
  • Inability to locate information on Ikon
  • Timelines involved for receiving and communicating information, with staff and community members
  • Inability to communicate with Department staff, when critical communications were required
  • Last minute requests of school leaders to ascertain student numbers on the day of the intended action
  • Concerns regarding duty of care provision, in the face of staff withholding their intentions
  • Concerns regarding community members making requests, or negative comments, directly to school staff
  • Confusion and unconsidered implications for partial closures
  • Regional consideration of student transport needs

WAPPA has documented these concerns, with a view to raising them with Department’s senior leaders, at next week’s Board Meeting. Given the potential for industrial action to continue, we believe there are many lessons that can be learned from this fortnight’s events, which we are keen to discuss.

PERIOD PRODUCTS IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS

WAPPA, along with all other associations, were strong supporters of this announcement. WAPPA advocated for period products’ inclusion in primary, when the original announcement was made, this time last year, by Minister Ellery.

We were strong in advocating that the money should not simply be placed into accounts for school leaders and MCS staff to manage, but that similar consideration must be given in relation to making this initiative beneficial for students and non-intrusive for staff. We welcome any feedback from members, as this initiative rolls out from Term 3.

STANDARDS & INTEGRITY UPDATE

Last week, WAPPA President, Niel Smith and Legal Counsel, Liesl Quince, met with the SID Directors as part of ongoing communications designed to share information and feedback regarding policy and processes, impacts and implementation.

SID indicated that they have designed a range of PL sessions for school leaders and we are currently working with them, to bring a series of 3x half day PL sessions to our members.

The workshops will focus on Understanding Frameworks for Improving Integrity, Modelling and Embodying a Culture of Integrity and The Changing Landscape of Reporting. It is anticipated that these sessions will be half day in length, across three weeks, with in person and online options.

Please watch this space for more information.

Last week, Association Presidents were briefed on the changes to the Child Protection Policy and Mandatory Reporting Requirements.

These changes were communicated to school leaders in Ed-email on 16 April. There are changes to categories of staff who can make Mandatory Reports as well as the ability of staff to defer this to school leaders. If you have any uncertainty regarding the new policy or how the changes impact you, please feel free to contact us.
