The Power of Consistent Routines: How CPRs Are Transforming Mount Lockyer Primary School
Consistent, Predictable Routines (CPRs) are making a huge difference at Mount Lockyer Primary School in Albany. As part of the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) journey, staff have been making an effort to develop and improve transitional routines, focussing on walking quietly in two lines, lining up outside the classroom ready to learn and moving to events such as assembly in a calm manner. The efforts are proving to be very successful, especially when paired with an awareness of our bodies and our brains. There is an increased sense of calm throughout the school and classes are returning from breaks and arriving as specialist lessons better ready to learn.
A surprising outcome of the focus on CPRs was noticed by all staff at the recent school athletics carnivals. Many of the staff commented after the days that the carnivals were the ‘easiest’ they had ever been a part of, a huge statement from any teacher! Staff and parents noticed a visible improvement in student behaviour on the day which many have linked to be a direct result of CPRs and the BSEM journey.
While it has taken time and patience to improve the routines and culture of the school it is not only wonderful to see changes to routines and culture, but also to have an easy athletics carnival!
