Walliston Primary Pioneers Innovative Intergenerational Learning Program
In a heartwarming initiative that exemplifies the innovative leadership found within WAPPA member schools, Walliston Primary School has launched an extraordinary intergenerational learning program that’s bridging the generation gap and enriching young minds.
Early childhood teacher Katie Atterton, supported by her school’s leadership team, has successfully implemented an intergenerational playgroup that brings aged-care residents into her kindergarten classroom of 24 students. The program, inspired by the television series ‘Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds,’ demonstrates the kind of creative, community-focused thinking that WAPPA member schools are known for.
“The research into intergenerational playgroups shows massive benefits and growth for both the children and the elderly participants,” explains Katie, whose initiative received immediate support from local aged-care facilities. The program’s success highlights how schools are leading the way in implementing evidence-based practices that extend beyond traditional educational boundaries.
The impact has been remarkable. Students are developing enhanced empathy, compassion, and expanded vocabulary through their interactions with their elderly friends. “Interacting with adults from a different generation really helps to expand and challenge their thinking and deepen their understanding,” Katie notes.
For the aged-care residents, the program has become a highlight of their week. “We love coming, how refreshing it is, how young and full of beans,” shares Francis, a 102-year-old participant. Another resident, Gail, eagerly shares stories of her visits with her husband after each session.
This program demonstrates the holistic approach to education that WAPPA members champion, proving that learning extends far beyond literacy and numeracy to encompass social-emotional development and community engagement.
