Hands On Learning Program – Enhancing Student Engagement, Wellbeing, and Attendance through real Hands on Learning.

This year, Neerigen Brook primary school has been one of only three schools in Western Australia chosen to pilot the Hands On Learning program (HoL) A nationally recognised initiative designed to increase attendance and student achievement by building personal and social skills and supporting the different ways young people learn.

To ensure the program’s successful introduction, students were invited to express their interest, apply and then they underwent a structured interview process. Teachers were also encouraged to nominate students they thought would benefit the most from being in the program. Additionally, staff travelled interstate for in-depth training on program implementation and best practices.

Throughout the year, students have taken ownership of their learning environment by developing the Hands On Learning Hub and contributing to our 3R’s Garden. They have engaged in upcycling projects using reclaimed wood pallets, developed practical skills with hand tools, and prepared and cooked their own meals for recess and lunch.

The program nurtures a strong sense of belonging, safety, connection, and community through its 4 pillars; a place to belong, people to belong to, real things to do and a chance to give back, providing students with meaningful learning experiences that empower them both academically and personally while giving them the opportunity to make valuable contributions to their community.
